Treatments for Lymphoedema available at our Surrey based Treatment Clinic
Decongestive Lymphatic Therapy (DLT)
This is the main treatment and includes four components:
- Compression Bandages/Garments: These help move fluid out of the affected limb and prevent further build-up.
- Skin Care: Keeping the skin in good condition reduces the risk of infections.
- Exercises: Specific exercises help improve lymph drainage.
- Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD): A specialized massage technique to stimulate fluid flow in the lymphatic system.
Additional Treatments
- Pneumatic Compression: An inflatable sleeve that applies pressure to the limb to move lymph fluid.
- Lymphoedema Surgery: Considered in severe cases to remove excess tissue or create new drainage pathways.
- Physical Therapy: Exercises and techniques to improve limb movement and reduce swelling.
- Massage Therapy: Helps move fluid out of the limbs, but should be avoided if there are skin infections or blood clots.
Self-Care and Lifestyle Changes
- Compression Garments: Wearing these regularly can help manage swelling.
- Exercise: Regular, gentle exercise can improve lymphatic flow.
- Healthy Diet: Eating a balanced diet with low sodium can help reduce fluid retention.
Preventive Measures
- Skin Care: Protecting the skin from injury and infection is crucial.
- Weight Management: Maintaining a healthy weight can reduce the strain on the lymphatic system.
